Tattoo - Why a semi-colon?

Last summer I took the plunge and got my first tattoo. It was rather spontaneous in the fact that my friend randomly rang me and said shall we go get your tattoo and within 10 minutes I was on my way to Birmingham. I say I went for my first tattoo but I ended up walking away with three, oops? I'll talk a little more about my other tattoos another time but today I wanted to focus on one in particular that I genuinely find myself looking at and reflecting on, on a daily basis - my semi-colon. This one has a lot of meaning and is one I frequently get questions on, including why a semi-colon? If you are a long-time reader then you will know about my battle with mental health and this tattoo is a reminder of that.

Abbwhi Semi-Colon

There is a whole movement around mental health and the semi-colon called Project Semi-Colon. The project is based on the belief that suicide is preventable and we all have a role to play in preventing it.

In writing an author uses a semi-colon where they could of used a full stop and ended their sentence but instead they chose to carry it on. This is what Project Semi-Colon is about but instead the sentence is people lives, it is to prove that when times get tough instead of ending things we make the decision to carry on.

People have this tattoo that have experienced mental health themselves or are supporters of the movement. After season 1 of 13 Reasons Why was released on Netflix, Selena Gomez and other members of the cast went and got semi-colon tattoos to show their support and to raise awareness about the movement.

My tattoo has allowed me to have several conversations with random people who have their own stories to tell and it genuinely warms my heart to hear people overcome so much. When I went on holiday to Cornwall I bumped into someone there - our dogs were playing together - who shared his story with me and asked me how I was doing. My dad was there and was speaking to him about it too, we had open conversations about our journeys and how we had overcome so much. It was so reassuring to know I wasn't alone.

As you can see this tattoo means a lot to me and is a constant reminder of how much I have overcome and how much of a better place I am in now. It is constant reassurance that I can overcome anything that comes my way - as can all of you.

I'd love to hear your stories about your tattoos or stories with mental health.

Much love

  2. Such an inspiring post. Thank you for sharing this. I'd heard of this project but I never actually knew what the semi colon meant/stood for. I think it's a great way to raise awareness about such a big issue in our world today.

  3. What a beautiful first tattoo to get. I think it is such a power symbol and to have it there everyday to remind you just how far you have come and how far you will go, is just wonderful.x

  4. Out of all the reasons to get a tattoo, I love your reason for getting one so much! I think getting the semi-colon is brilliant as well, it's so subtle yet it carries such a massive story with it.
